Wide Awake by Katy Perry
Many artists use in their songs literary devices to give a certain mood or setting. In Katy Perry’s song Wide Awake, she verbalizes and portrays these devices to express her song in a personal and emotional way knowing that many people face these situations everyday in life. Katy Perry describes her Wide Awake song as a "dose of reality" and she admits that the song deals with much more negative emotions than many of her previous single releases. The song was written specifically as part of the soundtrack for Katy's concert movie: Part Of ME. Second, Katy Perry added imagery to add meaning in her song Wide Awake. She stated at the beginning of the song “yeah I was in the dark. I was falling hard. With an open heart. How did I read the stars so wrong.” Katy was showing her emotions of feeling blinded by love and realizing that falling for the wrong man destroyed her. She also wonders how these obvious lies fooled her. Katy adds the image of “thunder rumbling. Castles crumbling. I’m trying to hold on” she acknowledges her happy ever after castles is now falling to pieces from this thunder that happened when she decided to move on and she’s Trying to hold on to reality even though she is losing her mind. All artists use imagery to show some story line or description to the song. Using imagery entertain listeners because it makes them wonder about the feeling and it makes them imagine the described looks in the lyrics.
Third, Katy Perry uses allusion to expose her life story in her song Wide Awake. The singer wrote the song, which in my opinion seems to allude to her break up with her ex-husband Russell Brand. Katy didn't specifically refer to Russell Brand when she was talking about the content of the song on MTV in 2012, but it's hardly any secret that the split from her former husband must have been the biggest emotional upheaval for her in recent months of the divorce.
