A Review and an Overview – the Introduction
As I begin to think on what I will write on my reflections on the significant lessons and insights that I have distilled in my readings for the past two months, I remember that American journalist and essayist Henry Louis “H.L.” Mencken once opined that: “A Historian by his nature, is an unsuccessful novelist.” If there is a commonality that I have noticed in the methodology of writing of the scholarly articles that I have read, it is the fact that majority of them was written in a narrative and historical standpoint. However, browsing through the readings and works of Abinales and Amoroso regarding pre-colonial Philippines showed that recent study has shifted into another perspective and it was in fact the Austronesians who first inhabited our Islands.
Furthermore, my learning experience thus far has also been an overview or an introduction of new concepts and learnings that were untapped during my previous lessons in history, anthropology, and its allied courses. Truly, as I have raced through the pages of my journal articles and readings, it destroys the common stereotype about history and social studies that these courses were basically boring because of the fact that its methodology of instruction is purely memory work and objective type of questions. Distilling the ideas and concepts discussed in the readings made me realize that in discussing and/or teaching history and its allied fields of knowledge, the concept or idea would always vary according to how the author would appreciate the certain topic or perhaps would vary according to the writer’s perspective. Thus, I have learned from the readings that social studies or history is a dichotomy and a treasure trove of various perspectives coming from various scholastic perspectives and backgrounds.
