1. Would you describe Mrs. Fields’ Cookies as more of a functional hierarchy structured along traditional functional lines or more of an IT-enabled network consisting of tailored business processes?
I would describe the organizational structure of Mrs. Fields’ Cookies as being an IT-enabled network consisting of tailored business processes. Throughout the different sections of the case study, several examples support the notion that Mrs. Fields’ organizational structure aligns with the descriptions and characteristics of a networked structure. The information system was designed to reflect decisions from the store manager’s perspective. The menu-driven system incorporated accounting, day planning, interviewing assistance, time clocks, and electronic mail. Clearly, Mrs. Fields’ organizational structure fits the charateristics of an IT-enabled network consisting of tailored business processes.

2. What role does IT play in the Mrs. Fields’ organizational structure?
IT plays a major role in the organizational structure of Mrs. Fields’ Cookies. In fact, the entire organizational structure and control processes are based on IT. Tom Richman described the role that IT plays in Mrs. Fields’ by saying,
“It gives top management a dimension of personal control over dispersed operations that small companies otherwise find impossible to achieve. It projects a founder’s vision into parts of a company that have long ago outgrown his or her ability to reach in person. In the Fields’ structure… computers don’t just speed up old administrative processes. They alter the process.”
Mrs. Fields’ uses information systems in processing, communication, and other managerial functions like operations and human resources. The implementation of IT at Mrs. Fields’ was guided by the key objective of operating every store as Debbi had operated the original Palo Alto location.
