ODUCTION
HP is one of the world’s leading Computer software, hardware and service corporations which provide services globally in all industrial areas such as health, agriculture and education. It was founded in 1938 by Dave Packard and Bill Hewlett as a garage company with its initial launch developing any type of gadget, software and equipment then later evolved over the years. It’s the only major company that succeeded during the economic downturn. HP went public in 1957 and had an initial investment of $US 538. Its current income as at 31 October 2011 is $US 127.2 billion with the current CEO and President as Meg Whitman. Over the years HP has acquired over 116 companies. However they still promote the Open-door policy and communication through blogs. This in turn helps to create universal communication and social bonds among colleagues which makes teams more cohesive. By combining both the formal and informal channels of communication, the company is able to fill in the gaps that are created by either forms of communication and it enhanced communication among individuals or groups to be both effective and efficient.

Decision Making
Decision-making is a cognitive process leading to a course of action. It involve five steps which include defining the problem, identifying limiting factors, develop potential alternatives, implement the decision and establishing a control and evaluation system.
“Old HP” decision making style was mainly decentralised. This was favourable as it was less constrained and made decision making easier as it incorporated the views of employees at every level of the organisation. When Fiorina started at HP she adopted the centralised decision making style. With this style the lower end employees did not participate in any decision making and were required to meet deadlines and standards set by top level executives. This led to a rigid culture were meeting targets was more important than the friendly and interactive culture at HP.
